SPARK HER STRIDE RUNNER central

Activity log & training approach

"Youngsters have greater energy levels than professional endurance athletes, scientists have discovered, meaning it is virtually impossible for the average adult to keep up." - The Telegraph, April 2018

We have found through the years our Spark Her Stride young ladies have no problem jogging some or most of a 5k with just a little practice...it's all about knowing what to expect, belief they can do it, and making it fun!

Spark Her Stride is a basic introduction to running, and is not intended to prepare runners to run the fastest 5k of their lives. Our goals are to increase weekly aerobic activity and to introduce young ladies to their first 5k so that they are more confident participating in running events and setting running goals in the future.

Most 5k training plans are at least 8 weeks. You’ll notice our program is less than a month, and very flexible. Here is an optional guide for keeping track of your running and activity!

You know your runner best, if a log will motivate them, please use it, if this will make it less fun for them, just take a look and use this as a reference. Remember, variety is the spice of life, and especially for little ones, we don't want them to get bored with too much running. So if they love soccer, swimming, dancing...please encourage them to do that on other days of the week!

Looking for recommendations for other places to jog in Harrisonburg? Here are some ideas:
  • On JMU's campus, around Newman Lake or the Quad
  • Purcell Park (several different length loops)
  • Hillandale Park (outdoor exercise machines along path, and "trail" running)
  • Elementary school tracks (when there are not other scheduled activities)

Let us know if you have any other favorites!
